There are many tiny frogs living in the bushes in front of my home. They all have wonderful BIG voices and sing frequently. I felt lucky to have captured one with my camera as they can disappear incredibly quickly. Here’s a graphite pencil drawing of one of the little critters.

Graphite Pencil Drawing: Crow in Flight

Years ago my daughter worked at a fast food restaurant. One evening, while waiting for her to get off work, I parked near one of those big dumpsters out behind the restaurant and was totally entertained by the noisy and bold crows and seagulls raiding the dumpster. This graphite pencil drawing of a crow is from a photo I took that evening. I think it’s a great shot of a bird in flight, even if this particular bird was preparing to dive into a dumpster again! HA.

Not a Graphite Pencil Drawing…….MUCH BIGGER. Zachary the Zebra

Yup, I made this zebra myself. Named him Zachary. He has traveled to art shows with me for years and is a great attention-getter! Folks see him from blocks away and HAVE to come and check it out!

I figure I should let you all know that I make these incredible wood cut-outs of animals, including pets! They’re made out of a special, very fine particle board, handpainted by me, varnished (so they’re somewhat weather proofed), and make fantastically unusual gifts! Remember back awhile to the horrible Australia fires, and the story of the fireman who graciously shared his water bottle with an injured koala bear? That story inspired this graphite pencil drawing. I hope by now that little bear is able to relax and trust enough to look like the one in this drawing!

Graphite Pencil Drawing: More Urban Wildlife/Raccoons

Oh sure, they’re darling! And…….what troublemakers. Here’s a graphite pencil drawing of some of the local wildlife in my neighborhood…. two juvenile raccoon siblings who camped out near the shed just waiting for the opportunity to raid the dog food dish! I knew they were there, watching, waiting patiently for the dogs to wander off. Eventually, I had to feed the dogs on the enclosed back porch to convince the two thieves to move on with their lives, which they did, but only in their own timing.

Graphite Pencil Drawing: White Tail Deer Fawn; hiding in plain sight

There’s wildlife everywhere! Here’s a graphite pencil drawing of a tiny, motionless little white tail deer fawn we came across while hiking in the forest not far from my home. It didn’t move a muscle! I thought for certain it would scamper off into the woods, but nope. Mama obviously taught it well! I snapped a few photos and we quietly went in the other direction. I’m assuming Mama wasn’t far off and witnessed her baby’s exemplary behavior with a smile, if deer can smile.

It’s spring and it seems all the birds are celebrating. Here’s a graphite pencil drawing of a little sparrow who was perched outside my window singing his (or her) little heart out. I love waking up to the sounds of all the birds welcoming the day. We should all be so enthusiastic, don’t you think?

Graphite Pencil Drawing: Canadian Geese

Here’s a graphite pencil drawing of a pair of Canadian Geese who live at the pond not far from my home. It used to be a real treat to see them, but in recent years they’ve become known as a nuisance bird at many of the local parks. They are very elegant birds, and yet, they are also very messy! I wonder why they no longer migrate in the winter. Anyone know?

I may have to do a painting, in addition to this graphite pencil drawing, of an American Kestrel. They are gorgeous birds of prey with blue, orange, white and black feathers. Very striking.
