Graphite Pencil Drawing: Free Spirit Coyote
Here’s a graphite pencil drawing of a free spirited, howlin’ coyote. I read an article recently about the government’s all-out attack on these incredible creatures, calling them “nuisance predators” or something like that, allowing for government agents to shoot them from aircraft and use deadly cyanide guns to blast sodium cyanide into the animals’ mouths. I’ll do some further research to find out the current administration’s policy regarding this medieval attitude towards four-legged meat-eaters. Hopefully, it is different now. I see them as a critical, and beautiful, part of the eco system.

Suzanne, this is a very nice drawing! You have captured the yote and his witching eyes well. I kinda like coyotes, as I do any intelligent creature.
Yes the various states still do practice the aerial hunts and cyanide traps, some more than others. Use of poisoning is slowly dropping off, as hunters and ranchers find it kills too many other species. Aerial hunting is becoming more expensive. However, snare trapping is still going on, and a newer hunting sport, predator sniping is on the rise. While there are quite often problem animals who do single out livestock, the coyotes habits are largely misunderstood, more by choice of ignorance than lack of study. Hunters feel that the coyotes take prime game animals unselectively (they do not) and ranchers often feel that the coyotes indiscriminately slaughter their stock. Again, there are problem animals. But not as the ranchers believe. Hunters in some states organize mass-kill weekend contests, and it’s often considered fun-sport to run coyotes to death with a snowmobile. It is most unfortunate. And it shows the continuing cruelty of the most destructive primate ever, humans.
There are a number of documents about the Song-Dog, such as J. F. Dobie’s classic Voice of the Coyote. If you’re interested, seek ‘em out.
Thank you for this drawing

Zippy,
Thank you so much for your wonderfully insightful and thoughtful comment on the plight of the coyote, and for your nice comments about my drawing too. It’s very sad what we humans think we have license to do to the other living creatures of the planet! I couldn’t agree with you more about the most destructive primate EVER on the planet.
Thank you again.
Suzanne
you are so cool I love this drawing!
did you know people do the same thing to wolves?
I think the goverment hates wild canids!
Thank you for your comments, and yes, I do know that wolves are also attacked this vicious way. It’s pathetic, isn’t it? Man’s lack of respect for other living critters. Makes me want to scream.
