Graphite Pencil Drawing:Barney, the Neighborhood Bassett

When I did this graphite pencil drawing, we lived out in the country when the kids were small, and Barney, the neighbor’s bassett hound, pretty much owned the neighborhood. His owners were gone off to work each day and he’d get lonely so he’d come lumbering down the middle of the road on those huge paws and plop his hefty body down right smack in the middle of the road at the end of our driveway, just waiting for the kids to appear. I’d go out and try to shoo him back home, usually with no success at all. He’d just turn those enormous brown eyes up at me and stare, not budging an inch. Only when the kids appeared did he get excited and move out of the middle of the road to greet them. They’d play with him and love on him, and then gently coax him back to his own yard, at least for awhile. We loved Barney!
